I first became aware of Drents in 1990 and after 9 months of research and just plain old searching I was able to find a breeder in Holland who would ship a dog to the USA. Akke was the first Drent in America and the next year Babette arrived. Both Akke and Babette had a wonderful life and lived almost 14 years.
After my experiences with Akke and Babette, I was sure that these were the dogs I wanted to always have and breed. Femke and Gilby came to me in 2003 from Joyce Pedrotti in Texas, and the next year we added Chibi from Joyce to make a small Drent group of 3 females. To find an appropriate male proved to be a more difficult task, as I knew I would have to import one from Holland because the Drent line in America was too closely related to my females. Timing was on my side and Martin Vogels, in Holland, had an available male and Rob Key, another Dutch breeder, flew to Santa Fe from Holland with Tasman on his lap.
Tasman has great hunting instincts and when he is outside, is always on the move and easily picks up any training. He is just a real boy.
Femke is the alpha dog and keeps a watchful eye over everyone and everything. Every time a new puppy joined our family, and we have 6 adults now, Femke always made sure the new dog ate first before she would eat. Although she likes to play with the other dogs, Femke loves one on one time with me and looked forward to walking to to street and getting the paper with me in the morning. We fake it now, because the street is 6 miles away.
Gilby is shy in the house, but a real Dutch explorer outside. She is the most adventuresome and when we hike and call the dogs in, she is the last to come. Not because she doesn't listen, but she has gone the farthest and comes back at full speed. If she doesn't like a given command she just looks at you as if to say "what, say it in Dutch". But she always obeys. Gils always walks around the house with a toy in her mouth and she is absolutely positive, that any new toy entering the house is hers.
Chibi, the name means runt in Japanese, is the fastest of the girls and loves to just run. She is always in sight when we hike and she keeps circling us in constant motion. When we stop for a rest, or drink, she makes a small bed in the dirt and crashes until we start again.
All our Drents get along just great with other dogs. We also have a Bernese Mountain dog and a large German Shepard."
